November is Picture Book Month, a time to celebrate literacy with picture books! Picture books are one of the first ways that children are introduced to words, as they are closely tied to the images in the books.
East Central Regional Library has put together a short list of popular new picture books. Check some out and snuggle up with your child today!
Picture books only require two things: a reader and a listener. Together, you have magic.

Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummins
This book shares the tale of Arfy, a homeless mutt who lives in a box in an alley. Arfy writes to every person on Butternut Street about what a great pet he’d make. Won’t anyone open their heart—and home—to a lonesome dog?

A child recognizes his own humanity, his capacity for doing harm and being harmed, his ability to feel joy and sadness, and his belief in hope and promise to keep learning.
Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller
When Tanisha spills grape juice all over her new dress, her classmate wants to make her feel better, wondering: What does it mean to be kind?
All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold
Follow a group of children through a day in their school, where everyone is welcomed with open arms. A school where kids in patkas, hijabs, and yarmulkes play side-by-side with friends in baseball caps. A school where students grow and learn from each other’s traditions and the whole community gathers to celebrate the Lunar New Year. All Are Welcome lets young children know that no matter what, they have a place, they have a space, they are welcome in their school.
What are some of your favorite memories around picture books? We’d love you to share them with us!
